Unshaken African

A Restoration Handbook

Ndumiso Maseko began writing Unshaken African during a period overshadowed by personal challenges, including a battle with depression and the harsh realities of an unresponsive job market.

Despite holding two degrees, he faced unemployment, which eventually led him to withdraw from a master’s programme—a decision contrary to his belief in completing what he starts. During this time, Maseko encountered a successful construction expert who provided him with temporary employment. The lessons learned from this mentor not only offered valuable insights but also reignited his belief in achieving his goals.

Reflecting on his childhood and the growing distance between him and his biological father, Maseko vowed to be a present father to his own children, understanding the pain of paternal absence.

This resolve inspired him to write this book, which portrays an ideal father figure that an African child could aspire to, amidst the complex family dynamics and inequalities of African society. Moreover, the book encourages every African caught in a struggle to remain steadfast and not let their circumstances dictate their destiny.

Maseko’s narrative affirms that we are products of our decisions — and choosing to pursue success will indeed manifest it.

About the Author

Ndumiso Maseko

When I wrote this book I was beginning to understand that resilience is something that is within the DNA every human being. It was that moment of self introspection that made me realize that I can overcome struggles that systematically deprive me and those I consider to be African people. This implies that the struggle continues and the fight for equality is one that is inherited by the next generation. This book is a contemporary outlook on where we are as African people and that if we forget where we come from, then our suffering will not end. It is a book that encourages every member of society to play a role in preserving humanity and ensure that we live together in harmony.
